Jury

A diverse and experienced international jury has been assembled to judge all photographs entered into the competition.

Mertxe Alarcón was born in Barcelona. She is an experienced photographer. Together with other Spanish photographers, she has published a photographic book called “Cazadores de luz” National Geographic.

Currently, Mertxe Alarcón is the graphic editor of the magazine VIAJES National Geographic Spain and she is also a freelance photographer.

Clemente Bernad was born in Pamplona in 1963. He studied photography, video and cinema at the University of Barcelona before graduating. His first project focused on Andalusian day labourers and his work has had strong social themes ever since. He undertook interesting projects such as Vision Mediterranean, Malaga Body and Shadow and Women Without Land for which he received the FotoPres prize in Human Rights.

His photographic work can be found at the Arles RIP, VISA pour l'image and several other exhibitions. He has a deep interest in the Basque country and finished a long term project called Basque Chronicles in 2000. He published the book “Malika's Dream” in 2004 and made his first documentary about the same subject. Today, he is undertaking several projects in Latin America, the Middle East and Spain.

Miguel Ángel Gaüeca was born in Bilbao, Spain, in 1967. He graduated from the Universidad del País Vasco and took part in several exhibitions including “Transexual Express” in BILBAO Arte and its editions in Barcelona and Budapest. His works can be found in the collections of the Museo Nacional de Arte Reina Sofia, ARTIUM in Vitoria and the Instituto de la Juventud de Madrid.

He continues to work on his personal corpus in which he makes use of false advertisements that place him in the primary role in order to gain a better understanding of the pitfalls of consumer society. The work proposes that one takes the artist as the starting point to reflect on the art world.

Ambroise Tézenas Born in Paris in 1972, Ambroise Tézenas studied at the Applied Arts School of Vevey in Switzerland before moving to London where he wrote for a number of magazines. He moved back to Paris in 2000 where he continued to work for magazines and partake in advertising campaigns. Most recently, he has been involved in an ongoing personal landscapes project which includes monitoring the changing landscape of Beijing.

His work can be found in publications such as Time Magazine, Der Spiegel and The New York Times. He received the Leica European Publishers Award for Photography in 2006.

Peter Rimmer Born in the United Kingdom, Peter Rimmer is a freelance writer, editor and communications consultant who worked for 16 years as Director of Information with the UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) until the end of 2003. He is also President of the award jury of the international OSH film festival at the World Congress of Safety and Health at Work.

He has worked extensively in Europe on PHARE and Twinning Projects, and in partnership with European colleagues in the production of videos, including the Napo series of animated films and acts as an Assessor for Health Promotion Wales, the Corporate Standard. He writes for Safety & Health Practitioner magazine and is Editor of Health Protection Matters, a magazine published by the UK Health Protection Agency (HPA).
